The Fairmont Hotel Macdonald has been a city landmark in Edmonton for years. Long known as the city's most elegant hotel and lovingly referred to as "The Mac", the hotel was built in 1915 by Grand Trunk Railway at a cost of $2 million. It immediately became the city's finest hotel and the centre of social life in Edmonton. Over the years, The Fairmont Hotel Macdonald has proudly hosted visitors from all walks of life, from political leaders and royalty to the many American soldiers stationed at the hotel in World War II and during the installation of the DEW (Distant Early Warning) line in 1957. The official visit of King George VI and the Queen Mother in 1939, was one of the most significant events in the hotel's history, as throngs of well wishers gathered below the main balcony to see the royals. In the early 80s, The Fairmont Hotel Macdonald fell into disrepair. In an effort to restore the centre to its former elegance, Edmonton designated it a Municipal Historic Resource in 1985. Fully restored to her original grandeur, the hotel is a tribute to opulence and grace. Since reopening, the hotel has hosted many dignitaries and celebrities including Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II, Canadian Prime Ministers, former Presidents and the Rolling Stones, to name a few. Edmontonians can once again share their long-lived affection for the glorious The Fairmont Hotel Macdonald with neighbours and visitors.
